Jovita Sosa

Executive Director

Hi, I'm Jovita. I'm a certified phonics and phonological awareness instructor; currently completing a Dyslexia Specialist Certification with an accredited IDA organization focused on multisensory literacy instruction. I also hold a bachelor's degree in business management & finance and have completed multiple courses on the physiology of speech production, the Science of Reading and the reading acquisition process in dual-language learners. I'm mother to four beautiful children, ages 18, 14, 12 and 6. I founded Grupo Juego y Lectura de Sunset Park as a volunteer community group in 2014, after realizing the need to keep children reading during the summer months. As a volunteer group, we helped hundreds of families connect to printed books and enrichment activities. We also helped families secure speech intervention services, participate in sporting events and apply for educational opportunities. I look forward to making a larger impact in NYC now as the nonprofit, Grupo Juego y Lectura.

Maria De Los Angeles Velasco

Community Outreach Manager

Hi, I am Maria, but close friends and the community know me as Angeles. I have lived in Sunset Park most of my life. I am a proud mother of three children, ages 16, 11, 10. My kids are my motivation to continue to be a better person and an example for others. I have over 6 years' experience serving in various school PTAs and School Leadership Teams helping to influence school decisions that reflect the needs of school families. I have also volunteered as a Boys Scouts Troop Master for approximately five years mentoring a troop of 25 through the ranks. Additionally, I'm also a Sunday School Teacher. I enjoy helping kids achieve their goals and unlock their potential so that they can look forward to a bright future with lots of possibilities. Grupo Juego y Lectura has helped many families in our Sunset Park community. We have advocated together for new schools, participatory budgeting funding, and renovations to our parks and local library. To my family, this group, especially Jovita, has motivated us to bring out our talents, to learn new skills and share them with others, to believe and never give up on our dreams.
